Called to Serve at Home: My Mission Field in My Own Backyard

When most people think of missionaries, they imagine traveling to distant lands, learning new languages, and adapting to unfamiliar cultures. But my calling is different—I've been called to serve as a missionary in my hometown of San Antonio, Texas.

A Different Kind of Mission Field

Weekly, I walk the hallways of seven schools across San Antonio, Hondo, and Sabinal. These schools are the mission fields that God has entrusted to me. The hallways, fields, courts, diamonds, and tracks remind me of the very places I once navigated as a student. Each week, I have the privilege of serving and ministering to over 2,700 student-athletes and 180 coaches through weekly huddles, discipleship opportunities, and creating environments where coaches and athletes can meet Jesus.

Unlike traditional church staff or ministry positions, I receive no salary from Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). As a self-supported missionary, I'm responsible for raising 100% of my budget—everything from my salary to ministry resources, travel expenses, and even the Bibles I distribute to students and coaches.

My Funding Reality

As I pursue the calling God has placed on my heart to advance His kingdom through the ministry of FCA, I've been blessed to build a community of around 78 investors who believe in this mission of leading every coach and athlete in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. I currently find myself in a precarious place for any missionary. To be fully funded and secure in my ability to continue serving God’s kingdom, I need to close a gap of approximately $1,500 per month.

What does this mean in practical terms? To fund the ministry fully, I need either 15 new investors, each contributing $100 a month, or 30 investors giving $50 a month. While this presents a considerable challenge, achieving it would enable me to concentrate solely on the ministry instead of worrying about financial stability for the ministry.

Behind each dollar is a potentially life-changing encounter for a young person searching for purpose and meaning.

I oversee seven schools with thousands of impressionable young people. Each one represents a family, a future career, and countless relationships that will be shaped by the values they develop now.
